Text Box: Greetings! This is the February/Winter 2008 edition of The Thorn. I pray you are enjoying this newsletter. The theme is “Period Winter Traditions.” I have asked the members of the shire to submit articles about winter, holiday, and religious traditions. The articles range from Norse, Roman, Jewish, and Polish traditions during Christmas, Hanukah, and winter. All are quite interesting and informative.
The next newsletter will be published sometime during the month of mid to late May. The exact date will be determined and announced at the next business meeting. The Text Box: theme will be a “Free-for-all”. A “Free-for-all” could be an article, poem, artwork, etc. about a passion of yours in the SCA. A few examples could be “how to” - dye fabric or spin wool, play your favorite game, make a favorite dish, a history of a particular King, just about anything. Contact me to discuss your interests or ask questions. If you have a better idea for a theme, let me know.
I would like to thank all of my contributors. You did a fantastic job. Vivant! Please keep sending me your articles.
Yours in Service,
Lucretia

Text Box: In the SCA: I am the Mistress of Arts and Sciences for the Shire of Blak Rose. As MOAS, I’ve begun a monthly A&S Night in the shire. I’m getting many ideas from our Shire members, and trying to work their interests into a possible 2009 event around fibers and food. I have received a lot of great ideas for different themed A&S nights. I try to utilize and showcase the many talents of the artisans within our Shire. When the populace hears mention of Blak Rose, I desire them to remember us for all of our many talents.

Greetings Blak Rose!

By now some of you have heard about the joint Demo we held with Montvale in November 2007.  For those that have not, lend me an ear.

Early in October, Baroness Magdalena of Montvale approached us about holding a Demo at the Carlisle Farmers Market on November 10, 2007.  I jumped at the idea, since it  is in my backyard.  We proceeded to plan things out.

It was my first demo and turned out rather well.  We had some fighting with the

Marshall, Master Wulfbrand Weigand.  Our friend Johann Lederer joined in the fun with him.  Lord Eleazar ha Levi ran a gaming table, and challenged the masses at games, such as Nine Men Morris and The Game of Goose.  Pani Magdalena, Lady Gwenfrewy, and Baroness Gwenllian did demonstrations on drop spindling.  We had some period dancing classes, courtesy of Montvale.  Between the two shires, a nice display with books, chain mail, swords, and fiber arts was laid out.

We met a lot of new people, and were well received at the market.  I would like to thank

everyone who came to the demo to support our Shire.  Hope to see you all soon!

Lord Aidan the Hostile
